Guest Professorship "Film and Knowledge”

The Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF is the oldest, biggest and one of the most prestigious film schools in Germany, and a hub for art, research and education. Renowned experts from the fields of practical filmmaking and academia provide dedicated support tailored to the needs of each individual student. Each year, our students realise a wide range of exciting new projects. As the only higher education establishment in Germany to bear the title of “Film University”, we carry out innovative, cutting-edge artistic and scholarly research within and around film and other audio-visual media. Cultural and social debate, an open-minded attitude and a sensitive approach to discrimination are all part of the university's self-image.

The Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF is currently offering an artistic and/or academic guest professorship on the topic of "Film and Knowledge" for a limited duration of one semester
(start date: November 1, 2020 or April 1, 2021), with the possibility of an extension for a second semester.

Field of activity:

We are looking for an artistic and/or academic researcher with an impressive research profile that straddles theory and practice, with a focus on the relationship between audio-visual media and socially relevant knowledge (e.g. in the fields of natural and/or social sciences, politics, health, economy or ecology).

The tasks include:

  • Carrying out artistic and/or academic research on the subject of knowledge transfer through audio-visual media (see the research fields listed as examples in the hiring requirements below)
  • Teaching (in German or English) in the university’s artistic or academic BA and MA degree programs or in programs for doctoral candidates
  • Exchanging research ideas and experiences with colleagues at the Film University
  • Establishing connections to media and research organizations in the Berlin-Brandenburg region and beyond

Hiring requirements:

The legal requirements for employment (in accordance with § 41 paragraph 1 number 1 to 3 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Brandenburg, BbgHG) are as follows:
  • Completed university degree (Master’s level)
  • Pedagogical aptitude, demonstrated by experience in teaching in English or German
  • Particular aptitude for artistic or academic work (in the latter case demonstrated by the successful attainment of a doctoral degree)
Additional expectations:
  • Scholarly or artistic publications that deal with the relationship between film and knowledge
  • Proven experience and recognized achievements in at least one practical field of audio-visual knowledge transfer, including, for example:
    - Audio-visual scientific communication
    - Audio-visual installations, experiments or performances with a focus on knowledge transfer
    - Research-intensive or investigative documentary films
    - Film as a tool for scientific or artistic research
    - Educational and training films, explanatory videos in social media
    - Data visualization / data journalism in film
    - New forms of public knowledge transfer in film, television or the internet
    - Research-based forms of social impact entertainment (e.g. "hard", fact-based science fiction, drama, thrillers, etc.)

          Desirable (non-essential):

          • Experience in collaboration with non-university research and cultural institutions
          • Experience in the acquisition of external funding
          • Own professional network of international collaborators and contacts

          Teaching requirements:

          4 x 45 min. per week.

          To ensure compatibility with practical and artistic activities at the Film University, the professorship can be taken up either from 1st November 2020 or from 1st April 2021 (with the possibility of extension into winter semester 2021/22).
